MMR Vaccination (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
MMR is a combined vaccine that protects against measles, mumps, and rubella — three highly contagious viral illnesses. Available at Unichem Petone Pharmacy for adults and children.
Who Should Get It?
Two doses are recommended, usually given at 12 and 15 months for children. Adults born in 1969 or later who have not received two doses, or whose vaccination status is unknown, should consider catching up.
Particularly important for healthcare workers, those in close contact with babies, and people travelling to areas where measles is circulating.
Why Is It Important?
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known and can cause serious complications including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. New Zealand has had measles outbreaks in recent years.
Mumps can cause meningitis and infertility. Rubella during pregnancy can cause severe birth defects.
Cost
Free under the National Immunisation Schedule for those eligible. Ask us if you qualify.
